The Murderer's Arrest

A Crisis Outside Himself
The accused servant
Werther learns that the former servant of the widow has been arrested for murder. He recognizes the man's history of desperate attachment and sees the case as painfully close to his own.
A final public appeal
He pleads for the servant and asks the authorities to allow him to escape. The appeal fails, and Werther's inability to save another becomes entangled with his fear that neither man can be saved.
A Boundary Before Christmas

Lotte's Request
A necessary limit
Lotte tells Werther not to visit again before Christmas Eve and urges him to master his attachment. Her request is intended to protect everyone, but he hears it as a final severing.
The decision hardens
Albert arrives while Werther remains in the room, and their strained politeness deepens his sense of exclusion. Werther leaves convinced that ordinary friendship can no longer contain his feelings.
The Last Visit

A Final Encounter
The reading of Ossian
Werther visits Lotte and reads from his translation of Ossian. The tragic poems draw both into grief, while their emotional closeness blurs the restraint Lotte has tried to establish.
Separation made absolute
Werther kisses Lotte; she pushes him away and orders him never to return. He leaves in despair, interpreting the encounter as both a moment of intimacy and the end of every possible future.
The Borrowed Pistols

A Deliberate Preparation
The request
Werther sends Albert a note asking to borrow pistols for a journey. Albert instructs Lotte to pass them on, unaware of the purpose she fears.
A fatal interpretation
Lotte handles the weapons with trembling hands. Werther treats her having touched them as a sign that she has granted his design, turning an ordinary act into confirmation of his private story.
Death and Burial

The End of Werther's Story
Death at home
Werther shoots himself and is found by his servant the next morning. A surgeon is summoned, but his wound proves fatal, and he dies at noon.
A solitary funeral
The steward and his sons follow the body to the grave Werther had chosen. No priest attends, and Albert cannot join the burial; the ending leaves the social and emotional damage unresolved.
